Professional Approaches to Fire Sprinkler Plan Review

This four-day sixteen-hour virtual seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct the plan review process for water-based fire protection systems. Utilizing the requirements of NFPA 13 the participant will be guided through an actual review of sprinkler system plans and calculations. They will discuss the importance of employing a systematic review process and identify the documents required for a complete plan review. Finally, they will review a submittal of hydraulic calculation presented with the plans and discuss the process of hydraulic calculations and identify the key pieces of information presented and the common errors that are made.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this seminar the participant will be able to:

  • Apply the requirements for Plan Review in NFPA 13
  • Discuss the importance of a systematic review process.
  • Identify the documents required for a complete plan review process.
  • Correlate the requirements for plan review with the requirements in other chapters of NFPA 13.
  • Evaluate the hydraulic calculations presented with a set of working plans submitted for review and approval.

The Know How for Fire Sprinkler System Acceptance

This two-day eight-hour seminar provides attendees with vital information on how to conduct field inspections & final inspections for fire sprinkler & standpipe systems. Fire sprinkler systems & standpipe systems are installed in stages and inspections are typically required at various stages before proceeding to the next stage. Typically, periodic on-site inspections occur as construction progresses to ensure installations are being performed according to the approved construction documents. This work typically requires inspection and in doing so are permitted to be covered, and/or before the system is commissioned. This course is designed to familiarize the attendee with the visual & physical inspection requirements of typical codes and standards.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the relationship various codes & standards have with the plan reviewer, field inspector & commissioner of the system.
  • Compare the actual installation with the approved construction drawings for compliance with appropriate codes & standards.
  • Explain the duties of the inspector during on site inspections of the installed systems.
  • Employ contemporary techniques of field inspections.
  • Understand the various stages involved in the installation of systems and the need to correlate & interact with contractors, other inspectors & the authorities having jurisdiction.

Understanding, Applying, and Enforcing NFPA 25

This two-day eight-hour seminar describes the requirements for properly maintaining a water-based fire protection system in accordance with NFPA 25. The seminar clearly describes the responsibilities for compliance & record keeping. It describes the specific scope of the standard and identifies the various ways in which information related to changes in the system are handled. It describes the various Tables used in the standard, their specific purposes, and when to use which Tables. It involves the attendees in a significant number of exercises to describe various problems encountered, identify the proper section(s) of the standard that deals with it, and discuss how to deal with issues not covered by the standard that may still be encountered.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the areas where and where not the standard applies.
  • Explain the general definitions and the standard specific definitions and their meaning.
  • Discuss the various Tables utilized throughout the standard, and how to use the appropriate table.
  • Explain the difference between an internal inspection and an obstruction investigation.
  • Discuss and demonstrate the various means by which information is provided to the owner, and the reasons for different methods.
  • Describe potential ways of impairing a system.
  • Explain the difference between an emergency and a preplanned impairment.
  • Describe the steps taken to impair a system.
  • Describe the steps taken to restore a system to service.
  • Identify various situations and explain whether they are or are not within the scope of NFPA 25.
  • Describe how to properly report various situations that are or are not within the scope of NFPA 25.

Understanding, Applying, and Enforcing NFPA 13D

This two-day eight-hour seminar describes the proper design, installation, and maintenance of a residential sprinkler system in compliance with the NFPA 13D Standard. As residential fire sprinkler systems are more widely recognized and adopted by communities, understanding the requirements for proper design and installation is more important than ever. The standard governing design and installation for residential sprinkler systems is NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Fire Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes. The key to successful enforcement is understanding the requirements of the standard and how they are applied. This two-day four-hour virtual seminar will guide the participant through the NFPA 13D requirements and identify how the standard and alternative approaches are applied. It is recommended that participants have NFPA 13D for virtual class work.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the scope and application of sprinkler standards for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses.
  • Identify the requirements for residential fire sprinkler system installation in accordance with NFSA 13D.
  • Apply the installation requirements and calculation procedures to various residential layouts.
  • Develop an approach for coordinating installation inspection & testing.

Seismic Protection for Fire Sprinkler Systems

This two-day eight-hour seminar provides a balance of basic and advanced information regarding seismic bracing requirements for Fire Sprinkler Systems. The basic information describes the responsibility of the contractor and Authority Having Jurisdiction for the proper installation of earthquake protection of fire sprinkler systems. The advanced information will be most helpful for those personnel responsible for the layout of seismic protection and those responsible for plan approval and inspection of seismic installations.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • To familiarize participants with the rules for earthquake design in NFPA 13.
  • Review of the seismic bracing requirements per NFPA 13 including:
  • Sway Bracing
  • Lateral Sway Bracing
  • Longitudinal Sway Bracing
  • Horizontal Seismic Loads
  • Restraint of Branch Lines
  • Hangers and Fasteners Subject to Earthquakes
