2022 Conference and AGM

Now that the 2022 BOABC AGM and conference that was held at the Delta Ocean Pointe Resort in Victoria has wrapped up, I wanted to communicate my thanks to everyone; delegates, sponsors, staff, exhibitors, presenters, volunteers, and board members, who contributed to making this event a success. After two years apart because of the pandemic, we were grateful to be gathered again and connect with colleagues and engage in professional development without any help of Zoom.

We were able to bring together:

  • 162 delegates from across the province.
  • A delegation from the International Code Council who joined us and hosted a Building Safety Month reception. Our Association has been a chapter of the ICC for just over two decades and we look forward to continuing that partnership in the future.
  • The Board of Directors from the Alliance of Canadian Building Officials Association who joined us to hold their first in-person board meeting in some time. BOABC is a founding member of the Alliance, and we continue to collaborate with and support the Alliance and building officials across Canada.
  • The Honourable David Eby, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Housing, the Honourable Dan Coulter, Parliamentary Secretary for Accessibility, and Her Worship, Lisa Helps, Mayor of Victoria.

Of course, the conference is designed with those building and plumbing officials in mind, and once again offered content-rich educational opportunities across a broad spectrum of topics. With increased professionalism and accountability for qualified officials reflecting the diverse and evolving role that building and plumbing officials play in BC communities, my thanks go out to all the presenters at the conference, and to the employers who supported the conference by encouraging their staff to attend.

We received overwhelming support from our event sponsors, led by our title sponsor interiorTech, with whom we’ve enjoyed a long-standing relationship. GHL is also a longstanding friend and supporter of the Association, and sponsored our wonderful banquet, where we were treated to the cultural dancing of the  lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Dancers.  It was at this banquet where we were honored to present two Association Membership Awards.  We also received support from our digital partner, Cloudpermit, BC Housing, educational partners like Canadian Wood Council and BC Hydro, ICC, Stewart McDannold Stuart, Canadian Home Builders Association, BC Association of Building Designers, EGBC, Manufactured Housing Association of BC, Passive House Canada, Reliance Worldwide Corp., Clariti, Cascadia Windows & Doors, IPEX and HRAI.

Earlier this year, the Association and broader industry in BC lost a great friend and supporter in David Pope.  David committed countless volunteer hours to educating building and plumbing officials and others across the province.  He was also instrumental in bringing plumbing and building officials together in the same organization.

The Casey van den Broek award was presented to Doug Vance, our current Vice President of Plumbing.  Like Casey himself, Doug has demonstrated considerable leadership and service in the field of building safety and code education. Doug continues to demonstrate a remarkable passion for our industry and desire to help current and future building and plumbing officials serve the public and industry.

Robyn McLeod, Vice President of Certification and Membership Services, renewed our commitment to formally recognizing and thanking members and others who volunteer their time and expertise to help the Association and its members.  While we recognize we missed some people who have made important contributions to our organization, we were able to thank the following:

  • Wendy Moir
  • Arne Dohlen
  • Jeremy Frick
  • Blaine Harasimiuk
  • Todd Loucks
  • Brian Marcell
  • Belinda Moen
  • Donald Pedde
  • Zara Rockwell
  • Jeremy Scott
  • Manjit S. Sohi
  • Andy Wilson
  • Robert Buckland

Thank you to everyone who helped make the conference such a success.
