Doug Vance

Doug has recently retired from his position of Manager Building Permits – Inspections for the City of Coquitlam. During his 33 years with the City, he spent the first 16 as a plumbing and gas inspector and the last 15 managing and guiding a staff of 19 building and plumbing inspectors. He also composed and wrote the necessary reports to City council, was responsible for staff hiring, assisted in preparation of department budgets; and perhaps most important of all, dealt with day-to-day department business. With his new company, AdVanced Building/Plumbing Code Consulting, Doug plans to stay involved in assisting building and plumbing officials in common interpretation of building codes by providing ongoing code training workshops and mentoring of new inspection staff through contract work with local governments.

Prior to employment with the City of Coquitlam, Doug’s most interesting private building industry experience was a partnership in a plumbing business for four years, mainly with design and installation of building, plumbing and heating systems.

Continuing interest in the building industry and learning has always been an asset in Doug’s career. He is an active member of the following organizations:

  • POABC President from 2007 to 2011
  • BOABC member since 2007
  • Registered Building Official and Canadian Registered Building Official
  • Level 2 Plumbing Official
  • Member of the Building Code Appeal Board (Ministerial appointment until 2029)
  • Member of the BC Building Code Interpretation Committee
