How do I apply for certification?
Members wishing to apply for certification, must complete and submit a Certification Application Form via their Member Portal.
When will I receive my certificate?
From the time that you submit your Certification Application and it is approved by the Registrar, it usually takes 3 – 5 business days to receive your electronic certificate.
What are the different levels of certification?
Building Level 1 – applicant must have at least two years of experience working as a building official for a local authority in the three years immediately preceding the date of their application.
Building Level 2 – applicant must have at least three years of experience working as a building official for a local authority in the five years immediately preceding the date of their application.
Building Level 3 – applicant must have at least four years of experience working as a building official for a local authority in the six years immediately preceding the date of their application.
Plumbing Level 1 – applicant must have at least two years of experience working as a plumbing official for a local authority in the three years immediately preceding the date of their application.
Plumbing Level 2 – applicant must have at least four years of experience working as a plumbing official for a local authority in the six years immediately preceding the date of their application.
Who can apply for certification?
A Regular and/or Associate One (1) member is eligible to apply for Certification after successfully passing the respective Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia (BOABC) Examinations and meeting the experience requirements established in Policy 1.1
How do I retain my certification?
To retain any level of Certification, a Member must:
- be a Regular or Associate 1 member of the Association in good standing;
- be qualified at the level(s) of certification being applied for;
- obtain the required work experience;
- submit an application to the Association and pay the $50 application fee;
- complete professional development (CPD); and
- attend and fulfill code change knowledge requirements when a new edition of the BC Building Code is adopted.
Is certification mandatory?
Certification is voluntary, this is not a requirement under the Building Act.
