Under the Building Act (Act), an individual must be registered as a qualified building official before making decisions about building regulations on behalf of a local authority.
There are different types of classifications of building and plumbing officials under the Act:
- Standard classifications (i.e. Building 1-3, Plumbing 1-2); and
- Trainee classifications (i.e. Building Official In-Training 1-3, Plumbing Official In-Training 1-2)
Applicants must meet requirements set out in the Act before being registered in any classification of building or plumbing official.
To be eligible for a standard qualification, an individual must:
- be a member of the Association;
- pass the required qualification exams;
- submit an application to the Association; and
- pay the annual registration fee.
To be eligible for a trainee (BOIT) qualification, an individual must:
- be a member of the Association;
- pass the building official in-training (BOIT) exam;
- submit an application, including a training plan, to the Association; and
- pay the annual registration fee.
To retain any level of qualification, a member must:
- maintain BOABC membership;
- complete the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points;
- submit an Annual Report;
- attend and fulfill Code Change knowledge requirements when a new edition of the BC Building Code is adopted.
