Presentation Overview:
This webinar will provide an overview of a few of the most popular resources, developed by the Canadian Wood Council, for building officials such as: the Span Book 2020, Beam Calculator and the WoodWorks® Software. A description of each of these resources can be found below.
Span Book 2020
The Span Book contains span tables in metric and imperial units for wood joists, rafters, beams, lintels, and deck beams and joists, and more. As a building official, you can use these tables (which supplement those published in the BCBC) to quickly verify spans based on the loading conditions, member size and supported length. At the end of this portion of the training you will have a complete understanding of how to use the book, and the assumptions used to determine the spans.
Beam Calculator
The interactive Beam Calculator is an easy-to-use tool that building officials can use to quickly verify spans for built-up roof and floor beams and roof and floor joists . This webinar will demonstrate how to specify the material properties, importance category, member span, service conditions and treatment factors to confirm a member size and display a summary of design ratios for shear, bending, live deflection and total deflection and bearing length. At the end of this portion of the training you will have a complete understanding of how to use this calculator and how to interpret the results it generates.
Introduction to WoodWorks® Software (Sizer Program)
WoodWorks® Software is the go-to wood engineering software designers use to quickly and accurately size beams, joists, columns, wall studs, and CLT panels for different loading types and distributions. Building officials are entitled to one free copy per department to check permit submissions. This webinar will give an overview of Sizer, including what to look for in the output to ensure designers have entered the information correctly, how to navigate the Beam and Column mode interface, and how to interpret the design results. By the end of this training, you will have basic knowledge to verify simple structural elements using the Sizer program.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the assumptions used to develop the span tables in the Span Book 2020 and how to interpret the information summarized in the span tables.
2. Use the Beam Calculator to quickly verify spans for built-up roof and floor beam and roof and floor joist spans.
3. Learn to navigate through WoodWorks® Sizer Beam and Column mode interface and understand the basic inputs to verify simple structural elements.
