How do I apply for certification?
Members wishing to apply for certification, must complete and submit a Certification Application Form for approval from the BOABC Registrar. Once approved, a certificate will be mailed out to you indicating the level that you are certified to.
When will I receive my certificate?
From the time that you submit your Certification Application, it usually takes a week to mail out your certificate.
What are the different levels of certification?
Building Level 1 – applicant must have a work experience requirement of Two (2) years, deemed to consist of 24 months of work within a 36 month period.
Building Level 2 – applicant must have a work experience requirement of Three (3) years, deemed to consist of 24 months of work within a 36 month period.
Building Level 3 – applicant must have a work experience requirement of Four (4) years, deemed to consist of 24 months of work within a 36 month period.
Plumbing Level 1 – applicant must have a work experience requirement of Two (2) years, deemed to consist of 24 months of work within a 36 month period.
Plumbing Level 2 – applicant must have a work experience requirement of Two (2) years, deemed to consist of 24 months of work within a 36 month period.
Who can apply for certification?
Regular and Associate 1 members who are in good standing with the BOABC, after successfully passing the respective Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia (BOABC) Examinations and completing the required work experience while employed by a City, Municipality, Regional District or other acceptable form of Local, Provincial or Territorial Government.
How do I retain my certification?
To retain any level of Certification, a Member must:
- Maintain membership as a Regular or Associate One ( 1) Member in the BOABC.
- Acquire Continuing Professional Development program credits as specified in the BOABC Continuing Professional program (10 per year).
- Attend and fulfill Code Change knowledge requirements when a new edition of the BC Building Code is adopted. Certified members must fulfill the Certification Code Change Maintenance requirements within one(1) year of the mandated training.
Is certification mandatory?
Certification is voluntary, this is not a requirement under the Building Act.
