Level 3 Online Course Information

This is a self-paced online course consisting of 15 Modules that has been designed to enhance your knowledge of the BC Building Code with respect to large and complex buildings. It is expected that you already have a basic understanding of the BC Building Code, its structure, as well as how to navigate the volumes, parts, and sections of the Code.

Module 1: Introduction – Large and Complex Buildings 

An introduction to the overall program as well as the basics of structural design requirements for large and complex buildings.

Module 2: Building Classification and Construction Type, Flame Spread, and Smoke Development

You will learn about building classification and construction type, flame spread, and smoke development – Subsections 3.1.2 through 3.1.17. of the BCBC are touched on.

Module 3: Fire Performance Ratings

You will learn about Fire Performance Ratings – Appendix D to Division B of the BCBC.

Module 4: Fire Safety – Passive Elements

You will learn about the passive elements of Fire Safety.

Module 5: Fire Safety – Active Elements

You will learn about the active elements of Fire Safety.

Module 6: Safety Within Floor Areas and Accessibility

You will learn about safety within floor areas and accessibility – Sections 3.3. and 3.8.

Module 7: Exits

You will learn about exits – Section 3.4.

Module 8: Vertical Transportation, Service Facilities, and Environmental Separation

You will learn about vertical transportation, service facilities, and environmental separation – Sections 3.5., 3.6., and Part 5.

Module 9: Health Requirements and Accessibility

You will learn about health requirements and accessibility – Sections 3.7. and 3.8.

Module 10: Tents and Air-Supported Structures, and Multiple-Tenant Self-Storage Warehouses

You will learn about tents, air-supported structures, and multiple-tenant self-storage warehouses – Subsection 3.1.6. and Article 3.3.5.9.

Module 11: Alternative Solutions, Renovations, and Relocated Buildings

You will learn about alternative solutions, renovations, and relocated buildings.

Module 12: Structural Design, HVAC, Plumbing, Safety Measures at Construction and Demolition Sites, and Housing

You will learn about Structural Design (Part 4), HVAC (Part 6), Plumbing, Safety Measures at Construction and Demolition Sites (Part 8), and Housing (Part 9 as referenced by Part 3).

Module 13: Additional Requirements for High Buildings

You will learn about additional requirements related to high buildings – Subsection 3.2.6.

Module 14: Fire Safety in High Buildings – Notes to 3.2.6.

You will learn about fire safety related to high buildings – Notes to Subsection 3.2.6.

Module 15: Mezzanines and Openings through Floor Assemblies and Interconnected Floor Spaces

You will learn about mezzanines and openings through floor assemblies and interconnected floor spaces. We will cover Articles 3.2.8.1., and 3.2.8.3. to 3.2.8.8.
