Please join Felix Wiesner, Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Forestry in the Department of Wood Science at UBC for a Lunch & Learn webinar on Fire Safety for Timber Buildings micro-credential.
Professional building officials are experts in the assessment of buildings. However, they have to consider all aspects of a building that is relevant to safety, accessibility and design life performance. This is in contrast to individual design disciplines, where engineers can often focus on their area of expertise. Thus, a disparity of broad versus specialized knowledge can arise where specialized, discipline specific solutions are implemented to meet a minimum acceptable building performance.
The above is especially pertinent with new developments and innovation. In British Columbia, recent years have brought a strong focus on the increased use of mass timber, which necessitates consideration of fire safety challenges. Thus, the use of timber as a structural material in tall buildings has been accompanied by multiple code changes and the introduction of a new construction type: encapsulated mass timber construction (EMTC).
This webinar advertises and details a new micro-certificate offered by the Faculty of Forestry in the University of British Columbia. The micro-certificate is asynchronous and remote and was designed to illuminate fire safety engineering principles to professionals who are not fire protection engineers. This involves a broad approach that is structured into four 2-week long courses.
This webinar will detail the inception and reasoning for this micro-certificate within the context of timber construction in BC. It will cover the content of the four courses and their learning intent, as well as the mode of delivery.
